I’m not pregnant, but maybe I soon will be, and I just want to make up a choice already and not wait til’ I am finally pregnant.
So what would you prefer, I would hate the pain, but I don’t want to be all selfish and drug up my child. Maybe even feel what I was inteded to feel during birth.
What do you think, or what have you had an what do you think about your decision or what you had??
I have had 2 natural births. I suggest, first of all, that you educate yourself about childbirth. Read some books (including ones that are pro-natural). Before I got pregnant, I thought I would get an epidural….Why not, right? But then I read about how it can slow down the natural process, and the drug does get to the baby. So I decided to try for no drugs and just see how it went. Ultimately, you have to give up control and just let your body do what it needs to do if you go natural. Some people have a problem doing that.
If you do decide to try for natural, make sure you choose a supportive physician. I recommend a midwife.
Yes, “feeling” what childbirth feels like is an amazing thing. What was remarkable for me was how, as soon as the baby was out, all the pain was gone, I just felt total elation, and so proud. But I won’t lie, it was excriciating.

I had an epidural with my first son and went completely natural with no drugs with my second. If i went back and did it again i would definately not have that epidural!!
Yes it was good that i had no pain for the whole labour, but the after affects are what made me decide differently after i had it. I have had severe back problems from the epidural and suffer alot still and that was 10 years ago!!
The natural was ofcourse painful but so well worth it in the end.
Im 36 weeks now and i have already decided no epidurals for me.
Its really your choice though, there are other pain reliefs you can have.
Natural all the way. There is a common misconception that childbirth HAS to be excruciating pain. It really doesn’t. Women who are comfortable with their bodies and listen to their bodies and work with the baby and the body, will have smoother, easier labors. It’s hard to do this in a hospital though sometimes. It is also important that you surround yourself with support and positive people. Any negativity will just bring you down. Yes, it will still be painful, but it isn’t an excruciating pain that the media portrays. Not many women experience this joyful childbirth though.
I’m still six weeks away from finding out whether I can make it without an epidural or not, but at my last childbirth class the midwife had some interesting comments- in particular that many women go into labour thinking it’s going to be a tough choice as to whether they’ll manage without an epidural or not, but in the end it’s rarely a tough choice. She said you will know without doubt if you need an epidural- you won’t be coping at all, and you’ll just know.
I was feeling very anti-narcotics (pethidine etc), but some of the info she had on that makes it sound a bit more appealing. All the things to consider with epidural (that you can’t move around, that you need a catheter, that it can really crash your blood pressure) have made me think I won’t have one _unless_ I get to that point of really needing it. I strongly recommend discussing in detail with midwives/ your doctor when you do get pregnant, and going to a childbirth class with lots of information.
Natural birth all the way! It your worst pain are your contractions, although if they have to cut you the stitches are very irritating. I have never even contemplated an epidural as it seems unnatural to me. I gave natural birth with both my children, although my daughter was born at 26 weeks and only lived 15 hours. With my son I had no option but to have a natural birth as I was 7cm dialated when I got to hospital and my water had only broken 30 minutes before hand!
I’ve had two natural births – I’d never consider having an epidural. I just think that if they’re going to stick a needle in your spine, there’s a chance something could go wrong, and I wanted to experience the whole thing – pain and all. Giving birth is probably the most amazing experience you will ever have by the way – good luck in the future.
Edit: Just wondering who’s handing out the thumbs down? It’s a personal choice about whether or not to go with pain relief – there’s no right or wrong answer, just personal opinion.
I had an epidural with my first two and was happy with that because I was still able to feel pressure so I knew when to push and both labors were under 1 hour. With my third I didn’t have time to get one so I did it natural and it was also a good experience, I was in labor for a total of 23mins. So I really don’t prefer one over the other, with #4 it all depends on how fast my labor goes and how I feel.
Epidural. Before it was given to me, I was in so much pain, I couldn’t move. But, I also had to have one as I was having an emergency C-section. Even if I didn’t have a C-section, I’d still want the epi because the pain was so unbearable.
EDIT: Holy cow.. why is everyone getting thumbs down for their responses? It’s a personal decision.
You really have to be experiencing it at the time to give an answer on this. Every birth is different so pain is radiated differently making our pain threshold varied. My first birth the pain was solely in my groin and I was able to cope with the pain. My second was all in my back and legs and very painful and so intense I felt I needed pain relief.
My plan has always been to try for natural but not be opposed to drugs since you never know what labor is going to be like. I’m suppose to be induced on Monday (if he doesn’t come before) and so I’m going to still try for natural but I know there’s a greater possibility that with an induction I’ll want drugs.
Honestly, you should not feel selfish if you want pain medication-birth is no walk in the park!
I had an IV narcotic given via injection, I went in with the intention to ‘see how bad it gets’ and for me, it got bad enough to be given pain relief.
No woman should feel selfish or bad for getting pain relief.
We have the technology these days, we may as well harness it if we need too.
EDIT:Agreed with below. Why??
Epidural, why would anyone want to go through that pain? I hear women say “I just think it’s natural and all that” Man forget all that !!Just give me my baby. I don’t have to go through all that pain to prove anything or make me feel more like a woman. Give me the epidural and lets get it over with.
i had an epidural with my first pregnancy and it slowed it rite down with my other pregnancy’s i didn’t have one and it was a lot quicker with my second child yeah it was painful but from the time i got to the hospital till i had her was 47 mins and the others were quick as well
I had epideral for first and didnt feel anything (except contractions up to 5cm) then none for my second. She was born within 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. No time for epideral and I think I am a strong women that can “man” up for 2 hours and birth a child! LOL
I have to say epidural ! I’ve seen a natural childbirth before and it doesn’t look like something I would want to do, if I don’t have to.
Epidural! I’m awful with pain and I’m really terrified about the birth!
Epidural !! For sure…
I got one and it helped out a lot. Because I was having contractions for a day and then they suddenly got worse..Go for the epidural !!
i AM PLANNING ON GETTING AN EPIDURAL.
natural of course… the needle itself just sounds to painful lol
Drug me up!!! LoL!!
