How Bad Is It To Let Your Baby Sleep On His Belly?

by Wendy Owen on March 1, 2010

I am very paranoid about SIDS. But both my twins have acid reflux and are very uncomfortable on their back. I have put pillows under their mattresses, and used the wedges and positioners. As soon as I lay them on their belly they are content and sleep soundlessly. Any other way they are restless. I’m not asking anyone to ok it, but how dangerous is it to let them sleep like this?

My baby girl would only sleep on her belly from about 7 weeks on… she was 6 weeks early. If we would lay her on her back she would just start screaming. To this day she sleeps on her belly. At first, I was VERY paroniod and would scheck on her constantly, now we just let her sleep all they way through… she is now 5months. I think you just have to do what you feel comfortable with doing as a parent. Every child is different and a mom always knows best.

My son was a premie and had acid reflux and sleep apnea. I was told by my dr to put him on his belly. Also if you are worried about SIDS there are motion sencor pads that you can put under your precious child they can sense you baby breathing and if your child stops moving (breathing) the monitor will beep.

Well the risk of cot death is increased if you put them on their tummies but the actual risk is still very very low. If they sleep better like that, then I would just let them sleep on their tummies. Make sure they don’t have blankets or bumpers anywhere near their faces. Grobags are perfect.

I have a seven year old son and a daughter that is just about seven weeks old. Both slept on their bellies. With my daughter I was a bit more paranoid only because of all that is said on the internet. But neither of my children could sleep comfortably any other way.

I would definitely consult a doctor, because we’re all just opining, really, but experts have been changing their minds about what sleeping positions are best for babies for decades. They say “back” now, but it will probably be “side” in a couple of years. I would gradually train your babies to sleep on their sides. Just turn them slightly while they’re sleeping. A little foam sleepform thing will help them stay in place.

It’s pretty risky until they can hold thier heads up. I think as long as they can hold their heads up it should be ok to let them sleep on their tummies. Make sure you don’t have anything in the crib other than a crib sheet.

Tummy sleeping is indicated for some babies with reflux.http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/t10600…

Its ok to put the baby to sleep on the belly. Just be sure that therer aren’t any pillow, stuffed animals and toy near the baby. smooth the crib sheet and just keep checking on the baby whhile he sleeps…don’t be worried..I was worried at some time too. but it’s ok..

The rule of thumb is to lay them on their back however my mom had 5 kids and takes in 4 foster kids all babies and she lays them all on their stomach because if they spit up atleast it will roll out of their mouth instead of swallowing their own puke and choking and dying. I supposed its whatever your comfortable with.
Congrats on the twins I’m so jealous

Well untill they can roll over, and even then, they really dont want you letting them sleep on their stomach. During the day when you are there, great go for it. But at night, they say no. WHY?? i have no clue, I dont see why they dont make some type of breathable liner. Watching her sleep on her stomach during the day, I really dont see how this can put her in danger, But im still paranoid to let her sleep on her stomach at night.

All of my children have slept on thier bellys since birth. They seem to like it more, they feel more secure.
