Did You Have A Natural Childbirth?

by Wendy Owen on June 21, 2009

I am wanting to know what it was like (especially regarding the pain you go through). If there are any women who have had more than one child and perhaps done both (natural as well as with pain medications), I would especially like to hear from them and know the difference between the two.
I am considering a natural childbirth – without the use of any drugs.

i dont think a women is any less if she gets an epidural, but more power to the women who dont get them! you guys are true soldiers!

I have had four, using the Bradley method. It uses total relaxation to prevent uterine cramps, so the main pain you feel is the cervix stretching. My labor felt totally different from cramps, it was just a dull ache that came and went. It was not severe pain. Please check into the Bradley method; it really works. Over 90% of the people who use it do not need pain medication.

I was hoping to go natural. However, I had very bad back labor and couldn’t take it. It is true what they say, once it is over, you don’t even remember the pain. If you can make it to 10, pushing is the best feeling in the world. Good luck!

i had a natural birth without drugs and although it hurt it wasn’t as sore as i thought it would be i also believe it to be better for baby and mum without drugs however if i get pregnant again and had a rubbish labour i wouldn’t say no to drugs!
confusing i know but i think it up to how you feel and how much pain you can take

with my first I had an epidural and it was painful. but not nearly as painful as it was with out it. with my second I had the epidural but it stopped working at 10 cm and I had to do it naturally. it felt like I was being ripped in 2 from the inside out. the only good thing about it was I could feel when I needed to push with out the doctor telling me and she was out in only 2 pushes. I was also up and walking around right after I delivered her but the stitches afterwards really sucked. I was screaming and the doctor thought that maybe the needle had slipped out earlier and but it had not. it just quit working for some odd reason. this is my third baby and I plan to have an epidural again.

I had a natural bith as I didn’t want an epidural and the gas and air made me sick.
If thats what you want then go for it, but realise it might not be possible or you may be in too much pain, it’s ok to plan ahead and have an idea of what you want but you never know how it’s going to go or whats going to happen so if you need some meds be open to taking them, there is nothing wrong with that either.

I’m also wanting to go natural. This is my first, so I can’t give you an input, however if you want to do natural I highly suggest you take a birthing class and read up on it. There’s a great book called “The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth”.
I think the more you know, the less fear you have. It is totally possible to do it natural. Women do it every day. You just have to remember that the worst of it is the shortest part. Many women give up and get pain medication right before it is almost over.
The postives of doing it naturally are also that you and the baby are fully alert after birth. And generally, baby can nurse much more easily.
However, always keep an open mind that things may not go as planned during labor.

I went natural with all 4 of my children, and would never do it any other way. Yes it does hurt its just like menstrual cramps but MAGNIFIED. not to scare you or anything but if you take some birthing classes and learn breathing techniques you will do great. After you dilate to about 6 or 7 the pain doesn’t get worse so just keep that in mind. That’s what I did as soon as the nurse checked me and told me I was that far then I knew this was all I had to deal with no more. When it is time to push that is the best part because you dont have to fight the pain anymore you can work with it. When the baby is crowning yes it burns because of the stretching but as soon as the baby is out ALL the pain is gone and you forget all about it. I dont want to scare you but my boy was 10 pounds face up and crooked with a 14 inch head. ya ouch but the doctors told me if I would had drugs it could have been a serious situation because I would not of been able to move around or feel where he was at or what was going on. It would have been an emergency c section and still then they dont know if they could have got him out before something happened. He is perfectly healthy and 6 now. You can do it dont worry it will be fine just have a strong support person and you will soon be holding a beautiful baby in you arms. Oh if you dont have an epidural you have no recovery time I got up 10 minutes after birth and was moved to a clean room. Good luck!!
