Is It Normal To Hurt This Bad A Week After Natural Childbirth?

by Wendy Owen on June 29, 2009

I had my daughter a week ago, when we left the hospital saturday I felt fine. But for the last couple days I’ve been in so much pain. I’ve been doing a lot more than I should be. I tore a little during delivery but only needed 3 stitches. I don’t know if maybe I ripped my stitches. I’ve been using the peri bottle and spray religiously. But nothing helps. Also am bleeding a little worse. But it almost looks like I’m bleeding from my stitches. I don’t want to call my doctor if this is normal. Any info would help!

It is normal to be uncomfortable, but if you are having any abdominal cramping, this could indicate a problem such as infection or minor hemhorrage. The best thing for you to do would be to call your doctor and make an appointment to be checked. Especially if you are not positive of where the extra bleeding is coming from. Try applying a clean cold washcloth to the stitched area for a little while to reduce inflamation. But DO call your doctor. The only foolish question is one that is not asked. Your doctor will agree. Good luck and congratulations on your mommyhood. :)
Oh, if you are breast feeding, the cramping is normal. It releases a hormone that causes your uterus to contract.

You should not be hurting bad after one week. If it is cramps from bleeding, or soreness in the bones then yes, but to have the pain on your skin, after rinsing, and rinsing isn’t helping, then you need to go see the doctor. You might have an infection in the area where they put the stitches.
I ripped too, but my worst pain was from the pubic bones moving back together. I refused stitches, and I healed up perfectly with no scarring after a week or two. The pain from the ripped area was gone in three days. I still rinsed to make sure, but I wasn’t hurting from it.
I really think you need to see someone and have them look at it to make sure you aren’t infected.

Natural childbirth is really hard on your body. I did it 3 times in 2 1/2 years. You need to just relax as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask friends or family for some help so you can be sure to rest. Your baby needs a healthy mom to rely on. Don’t feel bad about calling the doctor to ask any question. That’s what they’re there for. I’m sure they have heard many questions like yours. They might even ask you to come in and get checked to make sure everything is ok. Good luck and congrats on your new baby!!

I recall a burning pain at the tear site off and on for the first 6 weeks. Also bouts of bleeding off and on for 6-8 weeks. In fact… now four years later I still get a burning sensation at my tear scar. ( I had a second degree tear) Try a sit bath and some witch Hazel for the area. Every time you use the toilet, use a squeeze bottle with hot (but not burning) water to flush the area clean.

I was in sooooo much pain the first 3 weeks after my son was born. I didn’t tell anyone because I thought it was normal, but it turned out not to be, and I should have told the doctor. They can give you pain meds and check you out to make sure everything is ok…..better to be safe than sorry!
Good luck!

you should be feeling better each day and your bleeding should be getting lighter. If your bleeding is getting worse, you may have an infection. You should also be taking it easy and rest. You may want to call your doc if the pain does not get better or if the bleeding gets worse.

Call the doctor. It’s what he’s there for. Besides if you call just talk to the nurse. And yes, I do think it’s normal. Once those stitches start to dry out and heal it really is uncomfortable. Just call and ask what you can do to relieve this.

IF THE PAIN HURTS WITH MOVEMENT LIKE A FEELING OF RIPING THAT’S NORMAL WITH THE STITCHES AND IF YOUR BLEEDING ALOT FROM AREA U MIGHT HAVE RIPPED ONE YOU CAN FEEL AND TELL BY RUNNING UR FINGER DOWN THE STITCH TO FEEL AND FREE SKIN OR LOOK IN THE MIRROR AFTER A SHOWER ALSO JUST TO PRE WARN YOU YOU SHOULD TAKE A LAXATIVE SO YOU REALLY DON’T RIP!!!!!!! MY DOCTOR TOLD ME ALL THIS STUFF AFTER MY BABY AND THANKFULLY I DIDN’T HAVE TO MUCH OF A PROBLEM BUT IF YOUR HAVING ABDOMINAL PAIN GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!

After the birth of my second son, I became sick and hurt everywhere, even the tips of my ears. I had an infection in my uterus. Call your Dr. and get checked to be sure. Baby does not need a sick mommy right now!

It’s definately not normal. See your doctor immediately or you could be much worse soon. It sounds as if you have an infection which could be serious. Don’t leave it any longer.
