Question by JustMe22Steph: What are the chances of an 18 month old dying of SIDS?
My friends baby just died last week, and they think it was of SIDS, but what are the chances of that? It seems to me that he was too old for SIDs. Have you ever heard of anyone this age dying of SIDS? Also, is it true that his twin is also more likely to die of SIDS if he did?

My aunty was 20 months old when she died of SIDS. It is not unheard of but it is very very rare!
I don’t think the twin thing is true, no one can explain what causes SIDS, unfortunatly.
Sorry to your friend for their loss

According to the SIDS website, http://www.sids.org SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant under the age of one, and for unexplained reasons…
I suppose it can happen, though it is of course rare. Each baby is different, even with twins. With SIDS being so rare at that age, the death of the twin would be really odd.
I personally don’t know anyone who had a child that age pass from SIDS. But while it is very rare after 1 year, it is possible still.
And his twin isn’t more at risk now. No one knows the actual cause of SIDS.
I’m very sorry to hear about your friends loss.

Check out this website, it should clear some things up for you. WHat a horrible loss. My heart goes out to your friends and their family!
SIDS is really just an infant death with unexplainable causes. It is a risk which continues throughout life, but when it is no longer an infant, there is another name (I just can’t remember it right now) which simply means that the person has died without an known cause. It’s rare, but it does happen.
I’m sorry for your friend.
Usually sids is associated with ages 1 and younger. I have not heard of this before, but I don’t know. I do not believe that the twin will die of sids because their twin did. The twin might seem down and not their self for a while though.
It’s rare, but does happen. I also know a little girl who died for unknown reasons in her sleep at 18 months.
Wow an 18 month old…that is scary. But I think it is possible.
Im so sorry to hear this. Any baby can die from SIDS but as they get older it becomes less likely. Like a 1 month old is more prone to SIDS than a 6 month old. They really dont know what causes it they are always changing their opinion of it. But all you can really do to try and prevent is no toys in the crib, try not to overfeed before bed and feed about an hour to a half hour before bed (this is because some babies spit up after they eat), no blakets in the bed or pillows, keep the door shut so no animal can get in and make sure you have a baby monitor on at all times. That abotu all you can do =/
